Houston mayor Bill White was furious when he learned an unbiased study the City of Houston had requested from Rice University and Texas A&M’s Texas Transportation Insitute showed “Accidents more than doubled at the Houston, Texas intersections where red light cameras are installed.” Mayor White Banned the document from publication. Mayor White demanded a new study showing favorable results. He was Forced to release the study through pressure from the freedom for information act. The Rice-TTI study compared pre-installation data to post-installation data. Houston’s results comprised more than one-half of the statewide results and are used to establish statewide standards for the State of Texas.
